Recently, a massive tunnel boring machine (TBM) named "Patigarrang," designed and manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group (CREG), successfully rolled off the production line at the Zhengzhou National TBM Industrialization Center. Destined for the West Harbour Project in Australia, the Patigarrang sets a new record for the largest diameter TBM ever exported from China.
Located in Sydney, the West Harbour Project features twin tunnels designed for two-way traffic, serving as a crucial component of the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link. The tunnel's path traverses through diverse and challenging geological formations, including sandstone, siltstone, and layers of silty clay. These layers present varying degrees of difficulty, with uniaxial compressive strengths reaching up to 30 MPa and even peaking at 80 MPa in certain sections. To meet the project's unique geological challenges and client specifications, CREG engineered the "Patigarrang" TBM. This colossal machine boasts a cutting diameter of 15.7 meters and stretches approximately 113 meters in length (excluding the trailing platform).
Empowered by smart technology, Zhengzhou's manufacturing prowess ushers in a new era of safety and efficiency. The "Patigarrang" TBM integrates a suite of cutting-edge features, including a cutterhead inspection and muck-handling robot, as well as a cutter changing robot. This innovative cutter changing robot enables unmanned, high-precision automated cutter replacement, boosting efficiency by a factor of 5 to 8 compared to traditional manual methods. This not only reduces labor costs but also effectively mitigates the high-risk nature of manual cutter changes. Furthermore, the TBM is equipped with real-time wear monitoring for disc cutters and a grouting rate detection system, among other advanced monitoring tools. These systems effectively address the challenges of excavation and settlement control in complex geological conditions, significantly enhancing overall construction efficiency and elevating the level of automation.
Blending craftsmanship with cultural respect, the "Patigarrang" forges a new link between China and Australia. The TBM's cutterhead design incorporates Aboriginal Australian totemic art, creating a striking fusion of cutting-edge technology and rich cultural heritage. This serves as a vibrant example of cultural exchange between the two nations.
The West Harbour Project, slated for completion in 2028, marks Sydney's first new harbor crossing in over three decades. Upon its opening, travel times from North Sydney to destinations like Sydney Olympic Park and Leichhardt will be slashed by as much as 20 minutes.
The successful launch of the "Patigarrang" TBM marks another significant contribution by CREG to Australia's infrastructure development, following the Snowy Hydro 2.0 project in 2020. Leveraging Zhengzhou's strategic location as an international transportation hub, CREG has been adeptly tailoring its products to meet the diverse needs of its global clientele. The company's diverse range of tunnel boring machines has been exported to over 30 countries and regions across five continents, steadily expanding its international footprint.
